Japanese Vending Machines: The New Extreme

This past spring, I had my first encounter with Japanese vending machines. Hot coffee in a can? Cappuccino made to order? Yes and yes. Amazing.

But apparently it doesn’t stop there. Now in Tokyo: order your drink using a 47-inch touchscreen. Oh, and receive beverage recommendations based on age, gender, and previous selections.

My prediction for version 2.0: personalized playlists and hot meal options with your drink.

You can now also pay for drinks at vending machines with your cell phone and/or your train pass. I actually saw nylons for sale in one vending machine in Tokyo this summer. Read a scary statistic recently: there is one vending machine in Japan for every 12 people in a country with a population around 125 million.

Wow, that’s high tech and a bit scary — although the statistic doesn’t surprise me as I remember running into vending machines at practically every corner!
